Meet One of Swansboro’s Best Loved Inn Keepers & Restauranteurs

What brought you to Onslow County?

My family was in the jewelry business and we opened a new store here in 1985 when I was in school at ECU for jewelry design. Marty would come and visit me and we loved the area so much that in 1989 after we got married and our oldest daughter was six months old we moved here permanently because we wanted a safe place to raise our children.

How did you get started in your business?

In 1993 after our son was born the little red house came up for sale so we sold our house and everything we owned to purchase it so we could open a little coffee and bake shop. We were later hit by three hurricanes, our building flooded and our 100-year old pecan tree fell on our building. We were eventually (1998) able to raise the building, enlarge it and then added a deli to our business because we felt there was a need for it in town and shortly after our youngest daughter was born (1999).

How did the Church Street Inn & Pub come about?

As our business grew we needed more room so we enlarged the restaurant (took the space adjacent to the restaurant) in 2005 and added an Irish Pub to our deli. As we were opened we would have people always ask if there was a place to stay overnight downtown; because of that we knew there was a need for lodging in the downtown waterfront district so we added a second floor to our building with five suites and opened Church St Inn (2011).

What is the best part of what you do?

We have several favorite parts which definitely include the wonderful people that we deal with in our businesses each day, the beautiful town with amazing water views that we get to enjoy every day and most importantly that we have been able to raise our children in a safe, small town environment where they all have worked in the businesses through the years.

What else would you like to share?

After completing school our son (who was born the year we first started our business) has decided to work with us full time, is a great asset to us and our business and has plans to eventually run the business when we retire. We added to our business when we could financially and when we felt it was needed.
